The Alpha Course

The Alpha course describes itself as a “practical introduction to the Christian Faith”, which enables people to learn about the foundations that Christianity is based on.

It was devised by an Anglican church in London called Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) about 20 years ago but has really taken off as an evangelistic tool since 1993 under the leadership of Nicky Gumbel, then curate and now vicar of HTB.  Since then, the course has been run by thousands of churches of many different denominations in the UK and world-wide and has changed many lives.

The course was designed for people new to the Church, with little or no previous knowledge of the Christian faith, but it’s also an excellent refresher for Christians at any stage in their journey.  We’ve found it to be very useful for people who are quite new to church, or who are on the fringe of church activities, including those seeking membership.

The Alpha Course is enjoyable, informal and gives plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion.

The Alpha Course is backed up by a huge amount of material, including DVDs, books, study manuals, leader’s notes and even recipe books: all of which is of a very high quality.  There’s also frequent national and regional conferences.

Another advantage with the Alpha Course is that it’s so well known.  There’s regular advertising, including posters on the back of buses, and there’s even been a documentary about it on television.  This makes it easier to invite people.
